This is 1001
- Piece concept (comment from the artist at the time of selection)
- The Earth came into existence 4.6 billion years ago. Or to put it another way, it took some 4.6 billion years to shape the day-to-day scenery in which we live our lives. And there are 4.7 billion years left until the end of all life on Earth… My piece, This is 1001, brings a view of both the calm and excitement of the 1,001 Kannon Bodhisattva figures at Sanjusangen-do Temple in Kyoto's Higashiyama area to the present age, looking at them from the vantage point of artistic culture as it grew from the creation of civilization and culture. I created it from the idea of how the 1,001 Kannon Bodhisattva figures might be created in this day and age. The piece is the culmination of me working with the theme of memories throughout history and working again to trace where they go as they come to the present. In this project, I question the meaning of that and those values.
- Piece introduction
- The outside of the cube portrays the 1,001 ochre-yellow Kannon statues as they have been remembered since the end of the Heian period. On the inside, you can see a modern-day version of those 1,001 statues to show where those memories have ended up. Highly individualistic artists join forces in this project and give a new perspective to the statues distinct from the majestic ones depicted on the outside.
