Stone axe sculpture with stone axe motif
Piece concept (comment from the artist at the time of selection)
The two of us are working together to create sculpture pieces with a stone axe motif. The person creating the axe head is carving it from stone, and the other person takes that and carves the handle from wood. We're asked all the time why we're making pieces carved from stone and wood, and it's hard to give an accurate answer in words to someone who hasn't worked with these materials. Stone axes have no ties to borders or language. In the act of creation when the stone was chipped away, the wood carved, and when the two were put together, there probably would have been a sense of elation, competition, emotion, and pleasure at a time when language itself did not exist, let alone the term "art". Even in the world of art, 3D and VR have become commonplace. In the future too, the genres of mankind's creative pursuits will surely go on diversifying. We'd like to take another look at our origins and show our attempt at continuing the act of creation to the best of our abilities. The main players at the dawn of the Japanese art history arena were earthenware and earthen figurines, but we're rooting for stone axes.
Piece introduction
One of us carves the stone axe's head from stone while the other carves the handle from wood, and then the two are put together. These pieces show, with the motif of a stone axe, the fundamental desire of man to create since the time before borders or language.
