Shapes of bridges

Piece concept

It is well known that there are several large (Class I) rivers in Gifu Prefecture flowing into the sea, with numerous bridges over them. It can thus be said that Gifu benefits far more from bridges than do other locales. Building a bridge over a large river is no easy task. The challenge of doing so can be felt even when building a bridge over a small river, considering the importance of providing a structure that allows people to come and go freely over a river and the water to continue flowing without hindrance. A bridge represents a material presence that is essential for the passage of people and goods, and the act of “bridging” means linking two sides, filling the gap between them. It implies the effort of one trying not to be estranged from the other. The metaphorical expression of “serving as a bridge” is often used in reference to interpersonal relationships. Perhaps there are indeed bridges between people whose shapes are invisible. I feel that the spread of virtual reality, which the COVID pandemic has accelerated, has placed us on the verge of giving up on the material reality of “real” phenomena, and that this is a detour we are making because the bridges are collapsing. Without these bridges, numerous cultural zones that are strangers to one another would emerge, like long and narrow strips of land divided by rivers. In this work, I hope to present the shapes of these bridges.
