Scramble Crossing Space -Harmony of Non-Interference-

Piece concept

“Scramble Crossing Space,” which we have exhibited on several occasions since 2016, is a work created with the scramble crossing in Shibuya, Tokyo, as its motif. We have been gradually completing it as a choreographed work that depicts how people with diverse values, worldviews, backgrounds, and so on gather for a brief moment in the limited space of a single intersection, beautifully crossing each other without colliding. For the last six years, we have been witnessing all sorts of places where people are supposed to meet turning into scramble crossings. The way people coexist smoothly by not interfering with each other, while totally unaware of what those around them believe and without shared understanding of the whole situation, is both sad and beautiful. In this work, we use an 8x8 grid as an intersecting space. The video images of six persons who keep moving in all directions over the grid are first-person visual narratives each focusing on a single person, providing a fragmented view of various moves occurring within the space. The movements of the six persons do not meet; there is no physical interference. Their eyes do not meet, but only as many world views as there are persons accumulate in the space, growing in density. During the exhibition period, the six persons give live performances inside the Cube, offering the visitors the experience of comparing the performances to a whole picture of what they have constructed in their minds based on the video images seen.
